Altar in oak and bog oak
St Mary's Church, Beaminster, Dorset - the Hillary Chapel

The Hillary Chapel is located on the north side of the chancel. Until a few years ago most of the chapel's floor space was taken up by a large nineteenth century organ which was wheezing and creaking its way towards the end of its useful life. A brand new Skrabl organ now resides in the North Aisle, leaving the Hillary Chapel to serve its original purpose as a place of quiet reflection and private prayer.

I kept this altar very simple a visually uncluttered design in oak with bog oak details, sitting below the fifteenth century window and blending harmoniously with it. The underside of the top board curves up towards each end, again as a gesture of 'offering up'.

This for me is what the design of church furniture is all about.
